SEND Toolkit: Facilitator Guide and Materials

Help SEND students to understand more about different sectors, job roles, and the workplace; and facilitate access to work experience opportunities.

About this course

This suite of educational material is aimed at careers leaders and other education providers who are working with SEND students. The course is intended to help students:

  • understand more about work
  • access work experience opportunities
  • reflect on work experience

The activites on this course are designed to help students understand more about:

  • their own skills, strengths, and personality traits
  • the value of teamwork
  • industry 'sectors' and specialisms
  • different workplace environments

The course is split into 8 modules, and we've provided a module overview, facilitator's guide, and worksheets (in both regular and large print) for each one. These can be downloaded individually below, or as a single zip file, here:

Module 1: Who I Am

Ensure students consider the areas in which they would be comfortable attaining work experience.

Module 2: Personal Profile

Focus student thinking on their current skill levels and the level of any skills that they would like to further develop.

Module 3: Teamwork

Help students understand the benefits of teamwork in a workplace environment.

Module 4: Employer Research

Help students to develop student knowledge of different sectors they could work in.

Module 5: Working Environments

Prepare students for the expectations of a workplace environment.

Module 6: Workplace Practicalities

Help students to produce practical plans for their work experience; including travel plans, and personal preparations.

Module 7: My Work Experience

Support students in setting goals for their work experience and then giving opportunity to track progress and record feedback from employers.

Employer feedback form

Help employers to provide feedback about students who join them for work experience. This document encourages emplpyers to provide feedback on how students have worked towards their goals, how well students have demonstrated communication and teamwork skills, and whether they've been punctual and well-organised.

Module 8: Reflection, Progression, and Celebration

Help students reflect on their time at their work experience placement and celebrate the skills that they learnt.
