About T Levels

T Levels are a new, two-year qualification for 16-19 year olds and are ideal for learners who have finished GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to get straight into employment, an apprenticeship or higher education.

T Levels are designed to help students develop the knowledge and technical skills required for skilled careers. They have been developed in collaboration with employers to reflect what they need and prepare learners for work in industry as an alternative to A Levels. All T Levels are based on occupations recognised by employers.

T Levels involve more classroom study than apprenticeships, which means learners experience an industry placement alongside studies. Their time is split with 80% classroom learning and 20% industry placements. Students are required to spend a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) on placement.

Eligibility

T Levels require a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades 9 - 4) including English and Maths. Most courses require a grade 5 or above in Maths. Check individual courses for specific entry requirements.

Assessment

The T Level assessment combines examinations in the core skills, with a practical skills test for the occupational specialisms developed in practice. Assessments come in different forms, giving learners the opportunity to develop key skills and behaviours tailored to their employment.

On completion of the T Level, learners will have achieved the equivalent to three A Levels which carry UCAS points recognised for continuing a higher technical education pathway such as a degree apprenticeship or alternatively, the academic degree route.

Progression

T Levels provide a variety of progression options for students, including:

  • apprenticeships
  • higher education
  • skilled employment

There are often opportunities for learners arising from industry placements.

The Institute for Apprenticeships' Occupational Maps show where technical education can lead.
